Historic Ulus

Historical Ulus District

Ulus is home to a rich cultural, historical, and moral heritage that dates back to the pre-Republic period. This heritage reflects significant influences from the Ancient and Ottoman periods, including sites such as Roman Street, the Column of Julian, the Temple of Augustus, Byzantine ruins, Hacı Bayram Veli Mosque, Hacı Bayram Veli Shrine, and numerous inns.

Since the early years of the Republic, Ulus has served as the center of Ankara for finance, bureaucracy, culture, politics, and commerce. It remains an important cultural and commercial hub. In the Republic's formative years, Ulus was frequently visited by politicians, artists, and intellectuals. However, after 1950, it began to lose its significance as a political and bureaucratic center, undergoing a transformation that led to heavy traffic and an increase in nightclubs.

Additionally, Ulus has vibrant cultural elements present in its community. The Social Sciences University of Ankara plays a vital role in enhancing the social life of its residents, helping to revitalize Ulus, and striving to restore its status as an intellectual and cultural center.
